KEYS TO UNDERSTANDING
Theophilus is a man's name. It
means "lover of God." Luke (the author) may have known
a man by this name to whom he addressed the book, or it may
be intended for anyone who is a "lover of God." The Gospel
of Luke is also addressed to Theophilus (See Luke
1:3).
A Sabbath Day's Journey (vs. 12) is approximately
1,000 yards.
CONTENTS OF THE
CHAPTER
After reminding Theophilus of the earlier letter he had
written about the things Jesus did and taught, the author
repeats some facts which were recorded in the last chapter of
that book (Luke 24). He tells of the time Jesus spent with His
apostles after His resurrection and of His last conversation
with them before He ascended to the Father in
heaven.
Luke then tells of Christ's ascension and the
return of the apostles to Jerusalem to wait for the Holy
Spirit promised by Jesus. While waiting, they asked God
to help them select an apostle to replace Judas who had hanged
himself. Matthias was chosen.
