KEYS TO UNDERSTANDING
Herod: One of a family of
Herods who reigned as kings under the Roman government in
Palestine. This Herod was a grandson of the Herod who
attempted to murder the baby Jesus, and a nephew of the
Herod who beheaded John the Baptist and tried Jesus.
His cruelty is seen in this chapter.
Mary, Mother of John Mark: This Mary was likely a
sister of Barnabas.
Tyre and Sidon: Cities of Phoenicia
(now Lebanon). They were hemmed in by the sea on the
west and by high mountains on the east , and had little
farmland. Thus they depended on Herod's country for
food.
