Denying Self – Selfishness Hurts

Posted ago by David Maxson

The nation is currently fascinated with the Casey Anthony trial in which Ms. Anthony is on trial for the alleged murder of her two year old child.

We are shocked that a mother would do this. How could a mother kill her own child?

How can this be?

In a word, selfishness.

Denying Self – Seeking Wisdom

Solomon was given a blank check from God. He was offered anything he desired (2 Chronicles 1:7-13). He could have asked for possessions, wealth, honor, long life, or the defeat of his enemies, but instead he asked for wisdom.

You know the rest of the story. God not only gave him wisdom, but he threw in as a bonus all the other things he could have asked for as well.

Denying Self – The Little Things

In evangelism, it’s easy to fall in love with the home run. Peter preached one sermon and 3000 were baptized (Acts 2:41). Impressive. Churches try to match this kind of success by planning big events to attract the masses. We want to hit a big one out of the park.

Yet success most often comes from doing the little things.

Denying Self – Jesus’ Return

Most of us have heard that Harold Camping has predicted the so-called “rapture” will take place this Saturday, May 21st.

How has he come to this date? It doesn’t really matter because however he reached that conclusion is faulty. The end will come as a thief in the night (1 Thessalonians 5:2; 2 Peter 3:10). We don’t know when Jesus is returning.

Denying Self – Learning Prayer

Prayer is a discipline that must be taught. When the disciples came to Jesus and said, “Lord, teach us to pray,” the response was not, “There’s nothing to it, prayer is just talking to God.” No, Jesus taught them how to pray.

Denying Self – Pray for the King

Why should we pray for “kings and all who are in high positions?”

Is it for economic reasons? When we pray for our leaders are we praying, in fact, for prosperity? Is our motive materialistic?

Paul’s admonition has nothing to do with a love of money or the love of country. It has everything to do with love for God and a love for the lost.

Denying Self – Being Excited!

Now, honestly, when was the last time you were this excited about something? Was it when you were engaged in a period of intense worship and/or Bible study like during a special series at church? Or was it that championship game? Or that promotion?

Denying Self – Having God’s Mercy

Without question, Ahab was the worst king in Israel. However, when Ahab was rebuked for his wickedness by Elijah for selling himself to do evil, this wicked king repented and humbled himself before Jehovah.

Denying Self – Forgetting Monuments

After seeing the beautiful memorials to the Vietnam War, the Korean War, and especially the brand new memorial to World War II, this little memorial which was badly neglected and in obvious disrepair, just looked so sad.

A lesson to us that if we think we’re going to really do something memorable and significant in this life, we need a reality check.

Denying Self – Being a Peacemaker

What do we do when we see brethren fussing and fighting?

We tend to take sides… And that’s not wise for at least a couple of reasons.
